Welcome to West Point Junior High’s Choral Program!! I am so thrilled to have your student in my classes this year! This disclosure has a lot of information attached and links for the specific classes. Please press the links for your student’s choir class to find detailed information about fees/outfits/schedule as you proceed through this disclosure.

Students in all classes will be expected to learn, practice, and perform a wide variety of music. Some of this music will be sacred in nature. Many of our finest composers wrote music of a sacred nature and we would be remiss in your students’ music education to exclude it. The purpose of all of our music is for the educational value of the music.

Students need to practice regularly in order to improve. There will be theory assignments and listening examples which are online. Students will need access to a computer with internet to aid them in this class. If there is not a computer available at home, we have several labs at the school for them to use. Please let Mrs. Hayward know if you need school lab time for your student. There is a small computer lab in the music department that is available to our students.

Students will be expected to perform in concerts throughout the school year. All main concerts will be in the evening. There are two concerts each concert evening. One is at 6:00 pm and another at 7:30 pm. These times will be assigned to your student about two weeks prior to the concert date. Notice will be emailed to you about your student’s assigned concert time. Madrigals will be expected to perform on both concerts. Please be certain to attend all scheduled concerts. Concert performing is a main part of the required District, State, and National requirements for choir. There is nothing like performing in front of an audience! It is exciting and scary, but wonderful!! A student will only be excused from a concert for seroius illness. If a student will be missing a concert, communication must be made with Mrs. Hayward prior to the concert. The night of the concert is not sufficient notice. Students excused from concert for serious illness will be required to make up the credit.

There are costs associated with choir classes. Some of these are class fees which pay for some of the materials used in choir. Most of the materials used in choir are purchased with school funding and the fees offset a small amount. There are specific outfit requirements for each group, and the costs associated with them. There are several groups that will travel this year. The District charges a transportation fee, that is listed here as well.

Students grades are weighted. The grade breakdown is as follows:

Grading in choir will use the following scale:

Daily Participation: Students are expected to contribute to the class in order to earn participation. This means actively singing! (FUN) Students might not earn all of their daily participation points for the following reasons: gum/food/drink in class, unprepared for class, disrupting the class, vandalism, inappropriate dress for concerts, and tardiness. Students who are absent are able to make up their absences through participation makeup assignments.

Citizenship grades will be based on classroom and concert behavior.

WPJH provides all of the music for its students. Please treat this music with the utmost respect. If the music is lost or damaged, it must be replaced. In order to provide additional selections, students will have folder partners. Each partner is equally responsible for the care of the music.

Mrs. Hayward suffers from asthma and it is often triggered by perfumes and fragrances. Please refrain from wearing any scented products in Mrs. Hayward’s classroom. Students who are wearing fragrance may be sent to the bathroom to wash it off. Please be kind and courteous in this matter.

Here’s the most important part of this disclosure: Singing is Amazing!! We get to have one class period a day in which to perform music. What a great life we will lead!! I am looking forward to a successful year with your students. I hope they will enjoy making memories this year in choir!
