Everything You Wanted to Know About Me

Ty and Emma James and Sarah

Hi, my name is Lori Hayward and I am the choir director at West Point Junior High. I am really excited to be here and be a part of the future of West Point's students. Before coming to West Point, I completed my Masters in Choral Conducting at the University of Utah, where I was able to conduct the A Cappella Choir with Dr. Ed Thompson. This was awesome as we were able to tour Europe and to sing and conduct mass at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris! I received my bachelors degree in Vocal Music Education from Brigham Young University. I also taught High School choir and drama at Wasatch High School. I am currently pursuing my second Master's degree in Theatre.

With the Eiffel Tower My Granddaughter My husband and I have three children, two of whom are married. We are also grandparents to our sweet granddaughter, Elena. We enjoy traveling and our favorite place is Disneyland. I also love all things Christmas! !

In 2011, I was accepted into the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. This has been a wonderful opportunity for me to sing in such an amazing choir. It really helps to be both a teacher and a student at the same time. This chance makes me realize even more how amazing it is to share music with others. We can be incredibly amazing if we work together towards a common goal. I absolutely love what I do and I hope that enthusiasm rubs off on my students!

I have always wanted to teach! Even as a child, I was always teaching my younger brothers or sisters something. In elementary, the teacher would let me go around and assist the other students with their math. I love math - but not as much as music! When I was 10 years old I played the piano for our school choir. When I was 11 years old, I played piano for my school's choir and then I traveled to another elementary school and played for their choir. I was the first chair violin student in the honors orchestra when I was 11. I didn't actually get the chance to sing until high school, but when I did, I was hooked! When you really get into music, it becomes a part of you that you never let go. I want my students to have music become an integral part of their lives.

I am humbled to have been recognized for quality teaching over the years. In 2018 I was the recipient of a Best of Davis Award for Davis School District. In 2012, I was named Teacher of the Year by the Autism Council of Utah. This was an incredible honor, which I must credit our fabulous students for making possible. We created an awesome experience for a dear young man at our school named Michael Powell. Michael's Band If you want to know more, follow this link: 2012 Teacher of the Year and Michael - YouTube! In 2009 I was named Teacher of the Year at West Point Junior High. I am grateful to have been so honored.

Singing is a wonderful way to express ones self. It utilizes music and poetry simultaneously. It gives a way for us to put into words our thoughts and feelings about a particular subject. The sheer act of using ourselves as the musical instrument makes it a powerful way to share music with other people. In a time where there is so much chaos in the world, it's beautiful to share something so profound as a song! May each student rise to the challenge of giving of themselves to music! May music make their lives happier and better!
